Quick Guide to Upholstery Fabrics
When you bring in your furniture to Fabrics That Go for re-upholstery, the first thing you’ll need to do is to browse our massive collection of upholstery-grade fabrics. This may sound overwhelming at first, but our staff is always ready to help you pick the right one. That said, we know that picking your own fabric can be rewarding, so we put together a quick rundown on the basics. Here’s a quick guide to the upholstery fabrics you can find at Fabrics That Go.
Woven Fibers
If you’re looking for something that feels natural but durable, woven fibers should be on top of your list. Upholstery-grade cotton, linen, microfiber and canvas fabrics are also commonly used for couches and living room chairs. Woven fibers are known to be more resistant to wear and tear. True cotton velvet is just as durable, and it also adds elegance to your living space.
Synthetic Fibers
Not all synthetic fibers are created equal. While many people prefer the coziness of woven fabric, acrylic indoor & outdoor fabric has a functional appeal. 100% Acrylic fabrics like Sunbrella are stain-resistant and fade-resistant, and is also non-shrinkable. Fabrics That Go has a selection of fabrics called Performance Wear that have 50,000 to 100,000 double rubs (abrasion tests to measure durability). Kids and animals beware, this fabric is strong enough to survive high traffic.

Suede
Ultrasuede and poly-suede are great multi-functional, synthetic fabrics. They can be used in fashion, vehicle upholstery and interior decorating. Suede is a good pick if you’re working with large pieces of furniture. Ultrasuede is washable so you don’t have to worry about damaging the deep coloring. It’s also a great alternative to velvet you want a fabric that has a sleek finish.
Points to Remember
When choosing the perfect upholstery fabric, there are some things you should keep in mind, aside from texture, durability and overall look. Here are a few points:
- Tweeds and some synthetic fibers are magnets for pet hair.
- Higher pile or thicker fabrics conceal stains.
- Silk is delicate and can easily be marred.
- Denim is durable, but fadeable and wears thin under active use.
- Heavy embroidery or open stitch fabric is not ideal for large furniture.
Fabrics That Go only uses quality outdoor fabric! We do everything from fabric supply, professional consultation, measurements, labor, to installation and delivery.
Washability
Washability always comes up as a concern, however, our experienced and knowledgeable staff can guide you in taking care of your newly upholstered furniture. Sheen, loose weave, backed/flocked fabric can be dry-cleaned, and 100% acrylic outdoor fiber is bleachable. There are some fabrics that can be machine or hand washed with mild detergent, baking soda and vinegar.
