Quick Guide to Upholstery Fabrics

When you bring in your furniture to Fabrics That Go for re-upholstery, the first thing you’ll need to do is to browse our massive collection of upholstery-grade fabrics. This may sound overwhelming at first, but our staff is always ready to help you pick the right one. That said, we know that picking your own fabric can be rewarding, so we put together a quick rundown on the basics. Here’s a quick guide to the upholstery fabrics you can find at Fabrics That Go.

Woven Fibers

If you’re looking for something that feels natural but durable, woven fibers should be on top of your list. Upholstery-grade cotton, linen, microfiber and canvas fabrics are also commonly used for couches and living room chairs. Woven fibers are known to be more resistant to wear and tear. True cotton velvet is just as durable, and it also adds elegance to your living space.

Synthetic Fibers

Not all synthetic fibers are created equal. While many people prefer the coziness of woven fabric, acrylic indoor & outdoor fabric has a functional appeal. 100% Acrylic fabrics like Sunbrella are stain-resistant and fade-resistant, and is also non-shrinkable. Fabrics That Go has a selection of fabrics called Performance Wear that have 50,000 to 100,000 double rubs (abrasion tests to measure durability). Kids and animals beware, this fabric is strong enough to survive high traffic.

Don't have an old piece to reupholster? Did you know, Fabrics That Go is now providing custom made furniture? You choose the fabric and style, & our expert furniture designers make you a brand new piece custom made from your vision!

Suede

Ultrasuede and poly-suede are great multi-functional, synthetic fabrics. They can be used in fashion, vehicle upholstery and interior decorating. Suede is a good pick if you’re working with large pieces of furniture. Ultrasuede is washable so you don’t have to worry about damaging the deep coloring. It’s also a great alternative to velvet you want a fabric that has a sleek finish.

Points to Remember

When choosing the perfect upholstery fabric, there are some things you should keep in mind, aside from texture, durability and overall look. Here are a few points:

  • Tweeds and some synthetic fibers are magnets for pet hair.
  • Higher pile or thicker fabrics conceal stains.
  • Silk is delicate and can easily be marred.
  • Denim is durable, but fadeable and wears thin under active use.
  • Heavy embroidery or open stitch fabric is not ideal for large furniture.
Fabrics That Go only uses quality outdoor fabric! We do everything from fabric supply, professional consultation, measurements, labor, to installation and delivery.

Washability

Washability always comes up as a concern, however, our experienced and knowledgeable staff can guide you in taking care of your newly upholstered furniture. Sheen, loose weave, backed/flocked fabric can be dry-cleaned, and 100% acrylic outdoor fiber is bleachable. There are some fabrics that can be machine or hand washed with mild detergent, baking soda and vinegar.

If you need to know more about how to care for your fabrics, don’t hesitate to contact Fabrics That Go.

Creating the Perfect Arizona Backyard

It may not seem like it, but spring is just around the corner. With spring comes warmer weather - and with the temperature rising, what better way to enjoy it than to relax outside in your backyard? Here are a few tips and tricks to create the perfect backyard:

Garden

One step in creating the perfect oasis is to garden. Whether you’re planting flowers, bushes, or vegetables, make sure you plan for the right plants for the season! It may take more time than you can bear to wait, but consider planting a tree. When it grows, it will provide natural shade and cooler temperatures in your backyard.

Update Your Patio Furniture

You can replace your old patio furniture completely, or you can reupholster what you already have using the same fabric as your umbrella. Fabrics That Go offers full service upholstery and can order Sunbrella fabric to arrive in just a few days. Hot tip: Sunbrella fabric doesn’t need to be used solely outside - it’s great for indoor furniture as it cleans up easily for both spills and homes with pets!

Replace Your Umbrella

If you don’t want to wait for a tree to grow to give off natural shade, purchase a patio umbrella or replace the torn fabric on an old one! When looking to replace old umbrella fabric, make sure you choose the right one. It needs to be water resistant and not fade easily in the sun. Consider using Sunbrella fabric - famous for its durability and wide range of colors available. You can find this fabric at your Tucson’s own Fabrics That Go!

Install An Awning

Another shade solution is to install an awning. There are many options to choose from, but remember, you don’t have to replace the whole awning if just the fabric is torn. If you find your current or future awning fabric has not held up, replace it with Fabrics That Go. They will remove, measure and install for you!

Once you have made all these updates to your home, relax in your new (or feels like new) furniture under the shade of your umbrella or awning. Remember to thank Fabrics That Go for making your life easier and your home feel refreshed and renewed!

Sunbrella for Outdoor Upholstery

Everyone wants to keep up with the trends when it comes to the look of our living spaces, even patio furniture, considering how much time is spent outside enjoying the weather. We want it to be attractive and inviting.  Choosing the right material for your outdoor furniture cushion covers can make or break the space. Materials vary from color, to fabric type, and the usage. So let us focus on some tips in deciding what material to use for outdoor upholstery. After all, quality is very important because you want it to last. Sunbrella is the most trusted outdoor fabric, known for it’s resilience to harsh weather, that you can use for your outdoor upholstery. Find out why.

What is Sunbrella?

Sunbrella is an outdoor fabric that is made of 100% Acrylic Fiber. Acrylic fiber has the ability to dry quickly from moisture. It also has flexible aesthetics: wool-like, cotton-like, and blended appearance. Unlike other fabrics, Sunbrella can be easily cleaned. Think of the benefits that you can get out of this material!

Water Resistant

Since it is a high quality outdoor fabric, rest assured that you don’t only get to use it as a shade protector but you can also use it as a roof when it rains (umbrellas, canopies, etc). Aside from that, this fabric can be used as fabric for your cushion in your outdoor furniture. So even if you leave your cushion when the rain pours, they are safe.

Stain Resistant

Cleaning fabric, especially on furniture can be a pain to clean. But if the fabric that you are using for your furniture is sunbrella, you don’t have to worry out about stains. You can simply clean it by spraying it with water and it rinses away those spills. Saving you time and money!

Fade Resistant

Outdoor furniture is exposed to harsh weather conditions, like rain or sun. When fabric is too exposed they damage easily. Fading is probably the most common problem in locations with a lot of sun. Since Sunbrella fabric is made up of dyed acrylic fiber, it is believed to produce a long-lasting color to your fabric. Maintaining its attractiveness will never be an issue.

Mildew and Mold Proof

Another concern with our outdoor furniture is dust, moisture, or organic debris, since the cushions are left outside. Leave it to Sunbrella. Sunbrella is also mildew resistant, cleaning this fabric with a mixture of water/bleach will never cause the colors of the fabric to fade.

Easy to Clean

With all the benefits mentioned above, it is clear that Sunbrella is very easy to clean. Its properties make it easy to spray and wipe away any mess or spills. You just need water, bleach and soap, then you are done.

What do we do for our customers?

At Fabrics That Go, we always want the best for our customers. We make sure that when they bring in their old patio furniture or cushions for reupholstery, they bring it home with new life. When you visit the Fabrics That Go Store, check out the 255 different styles and prints.

You can change the covers anytime since our designs come with zippers. Sunbrella is the highest recommendation that we can give you when it comes to outdoor furniture, and we are happy to be your local supplier.
