Top Reasons to Upholster an Old Piece of Furniture

Whether you’re moving into a new home or redecorating, you can’t help but notice old furniture that has been lying around for years. Maybe you bought it years ago, or it was inherited from a family member. Be it an old lounge chair, faded couch, or ripped cushions, the urge to replace old furniture is strong because it looks out of place, or outdated. But is it really practical to get rid of them and buy a new one? If you want to refresh your furniture, reupholstering might just do the trick.

New Look, Old Memories

An ottoman you bought with your first salary, the chair cushions you bought for your first house, or your father’s favorite chair - things with sentimental value are hard to throw away. That doesn’t mean you’d have to keep them in your garage so new ones can take their place. With proper care, they can serve as family heirlooms. Classic pieces of furniture can easily be modified to fit your current style. It just needs the right kind of fabric and skilled reupholsterers.

Thank you a million for revitalizing our Queen Anne's so beautifully! I told My husband that the style might date us but then he reminded me that the antique set is 1800’s!! I started to take inventory of the entire room and average age of furniture is 1800 with a nod to 1700 in wall coverings!!! We now have trendy fabric! - Happy Tucson Customer

Fabrics That Go

Our History

The story of Fabrics That Go is really a history lesson of the American textile industry. Robert Grunstein, Claire’s son who has since taken over the day to day operations likes to tell the family history in the fabric industry. “My grandfather started the business in 1945 in Paterson, NJ, which was silk capital of the US, after doing the fabric business for over 30 years on the East Coast, my parents thought to retire to Tucson.”

Claire remembers the first night she arrived by plane in Tucson with her late husband Herman. “I’ve never been farther than Pennsylvania so it was big,” Claire recounts. “We landed at night, the city was sparkling. I’ve never seen anything like it. We woke up in the morning and I looked at my husband and said I think I’m in paradise, what am I doing in New Jersey I have to move here!”

Although their intention was to retire, after a month of playing tennis they opened a small hobby store together in Tucson by the late 70s. Claire remembered it “like a closet, this was even smaller than our store in New Jersey.” Before long they moved to a larger store and landed at the store they’ve occupied for the last couple decades on 3105 N Campbell.

Today, Fabrics That Go carries the largest selection of Southwest fabrics in the world and attract customers from throughout the US, Canada, Mexico and as far away as Italy for their unique home fabrics. Despite being in the same industry for her whole life, Claire and her son Robert still has a strong passion for the business, and it starts with their customers. “I love the customer’s,” Claire said, “I want them to be happy, because when you’re fixing up your house and you are making it pretty, it should make you happy.”

Claire, and the rest of the staff will be on hand this Friday & Saturday from 10 am – 5 pm with cake, lemonade and a smile to help customers find their perfect fabrics. If you are lucky, you can catch one of her many fabric stories from the last 22 years on Campbell Avenue. Even if you can’t make it in on Friday or Saturday, stop by soon, there is a good chance you can see Claire when you visit, she still works around 30 hours a week even as she turns 92 this year.

Custom Drapery Styles, Trimmings, and Accessories for your Home

Summer’s here. If you want to block the sunshine in style, it’s time to take a look at your window treatments and give them a little boost. With all kinds of drapery, trimmings, and accessories available, you may find it overwhelming to choose. We’re here to help. Here’s a handy list of drapery trimmings and accessories for different home styles.

Working with Custom Drapery

Getting custom drapery for your home is always the best option. You’ll be able to pick and choose the fabric and have them styled to your liking. Of course, there are some things you should consider before having custom drapery made. Think about how you would like to hang your curtains - by curtain pole or track?

Curtain rods are most commonly used. On the other hand. curtain tracks are almost invisible, often layering different types of curtain fabrics. Think about how thick you want the fabric as well. If you want to completely block out the sun, heavier fabrics or blackout fabrics will do the trick. Sheer curtains are best for homes that are not completely facing the sun.

Types of Pleating

Now that you’ve thought about how you want to hang your curtains and the kind of fabric you like, it’s time to choose the kind of pleating. The pinch pleat and tailored pleat are best for classic looking homes. The same goes for the goblet pleat. These types of pleating sophistication to almost any kind of fabric. Other styles like the box pleat, grommet, rod pocket, and inverted pleat look best in modern or contemporary style homes.

Trimmings

Next up: choosing your trimmings. Before you choose, consider the fabric and the type of pleating you want. Classic trimmings like brush fringes, bullion fringe, tassels or braid trims do not pair well with solid, more contemporary colors. These trimmings best fit classic patterns, neutral, or earthy colors. For a more modern look, ribbon banding, tape trims, and fan edge are the best choices.

Accessories

The last but not the least, are the drapery accessories. The first thing you should look at is your curtain rod. Standard metal rods just won’t cut it, after you’ve painstakingly chosen the fabric, pleating and trimmings of your custom drapery. Curtain rods and finials should match the look of your room. Ornamental rods & finials are great for classic or vintage style rooms. For contemporary rooms, the simpler, the better. Also consider tie backs or holdbacks that contrast or complement the color of your drapery fabric.

Want to see our wide collection of drapery trimmings and accessories? Head over to our store at 3105 N Campbell Ave Tucson, and talk to our friendly staff! They’ll help you pick the best trimmings and accessories for your home. We also do custom drapery according to your specifications.

Custom Projects For Every Room in Your Home

Refreshing your furniture? We’ve all been there. We spend hours looking for decorating inspiration online only to find the same trend over and over. When all else fails, let your imagination loose and think about how you would want your home to look. Don’t know where to start? Here’s a list of custom home projects for every room in your home.

Living Room

When choosing or replacing the furniture in your living room, seats, throws, and slipcovers should take priority over any other furniture, as they are the most used.

Accent Chairs - Start with accent chairs. This is the best way to break the monotony in any space is to use contrasting or complementary colors or patterns. Some accent chairs also look great with multi-fabric upholstery.

Ottomans - Ottomans are also a great addition to any living room, as it doubles as a seat and extra storage.

You may also use ottomans as an extension of your couch, or use it as a footstool.

Couches - Loveseats or three-seater couches? It depends on the amount of space you have of course! Regardless of the size, your couch is the centerpiece of the room, so you should be careful when choosing the fabric for upholstery. Couches usually have neutral colors (or patterns) so it’s easy to contrast with other chairs and throws.

Slipcovers - Slipcovers for your chairs and couches are great too if you want to change your style once in a while.

Dining Room

Dining Chairs - How do you choose the right fabric for your dining chairs? For starters, it depends on the type of material the chair is made of. There’s also size to consider, and the type of table you have. The best fabrics to use are stain-resistant fabrics like microfiber, or even outdoor performance fabrics Sunbrella.

Bedroom

When we think of the bedroom, the first thing that comes to mind is comfort. It’s not just about physical comfort - it’s also about how your bedroom looks.

Headboards - Headboards don’t only protect your walls from scratches, they give you visual comfort. If you’re the expressive type, you can also use the headboard as decor. You can use a variety of fabrics to upholster your headboard - from linen to velvet. Tufted headboards look great in more classic bedrooms, while leather headboards are perfect for a more industrial feel.

Bedding - Why settle for plain old sheets when you want to have maximum physical and visual comfort?

The most common - and perhaps the most comfortable - fabrics used for sheets and mattress covers are linen and cotton.

Backyard

Sometimes we just want to relax outdoors without leaving the comfort of our own homes. When choosing outdoor or patio furniture, consider fabrics that are comfortable, but at the same time, able to withstand the wear and tear.

Patio Furniture - From couches to throws, umbrellas to awnings, the best outdoor fabric should be able to withstand the wear and tear. How do you determine if a fabric is strong enough? Ask your local fabric store about double rubs or abrasion rating. An abrasion rating of 20,000 should be enough for heavy use.

Having custom furniture made to your specifications will make your home look one of a kind, a space that you can truly call your own. Fabrics That Go can help you turn your ideas into reality. Visit our store or contact us today.

Sunbrella for Your Arizona Home

The Sonoran might be known as the wettest desert, but on average it rains only 36 days in a year. Arizona is sunny for the most part of the year, and chances are you’ll be spending a lot of time in your backyard or patio. How do you make your outdoor spaces more inviting? Using the right outdoor fabric for your furniture can make all the difference. Fabrics That Go carries Sunbrella, and it’s one of the best outdoor fabrics you can get. Here’s why:

Made to Last

Sunbrella is a type of fabric with wool-like or cotton-like appearance and texture but is totally synthetic. Made with 100% acrylic fiber, it’s durable enough to withstand the intense Arizona sun and almost any outdoor activity. Because it’s synthetic, it’s fade and stain resistant, it’s not susceptible to mold and mildew.

Popular for Indoor & Outdoor Furniture

Outdoor drapery, grill covers, outdoor upholstery and pillows --these are only a few ways you can use Sunbrella. Because it’s easy to clean, it’s also popular for indoor furniture, especially in high traffic areas in homes with pets and children.

Bar stool cushions or upholstery for easy clean up, with attractive solid colors, are perfect for outdoor bars and barbecues.
Wipe down spills and moisture easily off Sunbrella Fabric, which will last for many years, maintaining its vibrant colors.

Pictured: Just completed sailboat cushions and accessories with specific marine grade vinyl for outdoors.

Style Options to Fit Any Home

With so many color options and patterns to choose from, Sunbrella fabrics make it easier for you to match your outdoor furniture with your landscaping. Pro-tip: matching the color of your plant pots with the biggest furniture will give the space a cohesive feel. Popular solid colors are teal and rust orange.

Southwestern stripes like the orange and red Bravada Salsa fabric (longest running pattern) brings an interesting pop of color. Taupe and grey are also popular bases for larger furniture.

Need to reupholster your furniture? Fabrics That Go does everything from from fabric supply, professional consultation, measurements, labor, to installation and delivery. Contact us for a quote.

This distinct Southwestern style is colorful yet sophisticated and can be used with many other interior styles. It’s not that hard to incorporate this style into your home. Try mixing and matching to see which works best for you.

Add Variety to Space

Some Southwestern style fabrics integrate very well with most Arizona homes. It adds a pop of color while retaining the cozy, inviting feeling. The patterns are interesting enough to uplift a space, but not loud enough to stick out like a sore thumb.

Claire’s Rare Button Collection

Seeing some objects from the past often brings nostalgic feelings. We are often brought back in time by the sight of these objects. Some objects inspire our artistic side and get our creativity flowing. The vintage buttons in Claire's Rare Button Collection, which she collected over the decades, are capable of invoking both within us. Today these rare buttons can be considered vintage and would be very hard to find anywhere else.

Claire

Claire Grunstein is the 91-year-old owner of Fabrics that go. She came to Tucson with her husband Herman in the late ’70s with the intention of retiring. She retired from her family’s textile business in New Jersey. Retirement did not sit well with the hardworking couple though, and they decided to open a tiny hobby shop a few months after retiring. The tiny hobby shop grew into what is now Fabrics That Go

Now 30 years on and at 91 years old, Claire is one of the oldest hands-on proprietors in the country. Although the day-to-day operations of the business are handled by her son Robert, she still works up to 30 hours a week and you can usually see her if you drop by the store.

The Button Collection

One of Claire’s passions is collecting buttons, and she currently has an incredibly large rare button collection. These pieces were accumulated over time. There are thousands of buttons in the collection and all of them are for sale depending on the rarity and availability. They can range from a lot in stock to only a few buttons left. Most of these rare buttons are of antique quality and made with superb craftsmanship.

The Materials

The materials used to make these buttons are equally rare and exotic. There are those made from Czechoslovakia glass, Indian metals, silver, and bakelite. There are also those made of organic materials like Mother of Pearl, bone, horn and tree nut.

You’ll even find pieces that are works of art in themselves, like the beaded buttons and the fabric covered ones.

What They Are Used For

These rare buttons are normally used on clothing but they can also be used to decorate pillows and upholstery. Quilters enjoy using these buttons on their pieces because of their great variety. Due to the artistic qualities of these rare buttons, they are even used for jewelry like children’s charms and as decorations and clasps on purses. They have even been embedded on coffee tables. The possibilities are endless!

All designers, artists, and DIYers are welcome to check out Claire’s rare button collection. You might be inspired to use them in your future creative projects. Your imagination is the limit with what you can do with these buttons. Come by as soon as you can, since some of these buttons have very limited stock left. Just drop by Fabrics That Go and ask to see Claire’s rare buttons, you will be guided back to explore the amazing pieces, and to choose which buttons you’d like to purchase.

Fabrics That Go is home to rare fabric, buttons, and more! Our staff is also skilled in custom drapery, and upholstery, and will work according to your needs. Drop by the shop to see our vast collection.

This may sound overwhelming at first, but our staff is always ready to help you pick the right one. That said, we know that picking your own fabric can be rewarding, so we put together a quick rundown on the basics. Here’s a quick guide to the upholstery fabrics you can find at Fabrics That Go.

If you’re looking for something that feels natural but durable, woven fibers should be on top of your list. True cotton velvet is just as durable, and it also adds elegance to your living space.

Synthetic Fibers

Not all synthetic fibers are created equal. While many people prefer the coziness of woven fabric, acrylic indoor & outdoor fabric has a functional appeal. 100% Acrylic fabrics like Sunbrella are stain-resistant and fade-resistant, and is also non-shrinkable. Fabrics That Go has a selection of fabrics called Performance Wear that have 50,000 to 100,000 double rubs (abrasion tests to measure durability). Kids and animals beware, this fabric is strong enough to survive high traffic.

Don't have an old piece to reupholster? Did you know, Fabrics That Go is now providing custom made furniture? You choose the fabric and style, & our expert furniture designers make you a brand new piece custom made from your vision!

Suede

Ultrasuede and poly-suede are great multi-functional, synthetic fabrics. They can be used in fashion, vehicle upholstery and interior decorating. Suede is a good pick if you’re working with large pieces of furniture. Ultrasuede is washable so you don’t have to worry about damaging the deep coloring. It’s also a great alternative to velvet you want a fabric that has a sleek finish.

Points to Remember

When choosing the perfect upholstery fabric, there are some things you should keep in mind, aside from texture, durability and overall look. Here are a few points:

  • Tweeds and some synthetic fibers are magnets for pet hair.
  • Higher pile or thicker fabrics conceal stains.
  • Silk is delicate and can easily be marred.
  • Denim is durable, but fadeable and wears thin under active use.
  • Heavy embroidery or open stitch fabric is not ideal for large furniture.
Fabrics That Go only uses quality outdoor fabric! We do everything from fabric supply, professional consultation, measurements, labor, to installation and delivery.

Washability

Washability always comes up as a concern, however, our experienced and knowledgeable staff can guide you in taking care of your newly upholstered furniture. Sheen, loose weave, backed/flocked fabric can be dry-cleaned, and 100% acrylic outdoor fiber is bleachable. There are some fabrics that can be machine or hand washed with mild detergent, baking soda and vinegar.

If you need to know more about how to care for your fabrics, don’t hesitate to contact Fabrics That Go.
