Differences Between Cornice, Valances, and other Window Treatments

Choose Which Window Treatment Will Work Best for Your Home

Window treatments can adorn your home in a very dynamic way. Whether you add a cornice, valance, or other types of window treatments, it’s important to make sure that they complement the look of your home in its entirety.

Not sure which ones to add? Take a look at the different window treatment options below to help you determine which ones work best.

Cornice

Cornices complete your window fixtures with a piece of fabric that essentially flows down and are ideal for covering up window treatment hardware to ensure that your windows, and your home as a whole, will look pleasing to the eye. They’re fixed with an upholstering board to make sure that there is no loose fabric hanging, giving your windows that sleek look. They work perfectly well with multiple treatments.

Valance

Just like cornices, valances top off your window, softly hung on a 4″ plate. They’re made from very short fabrics with either a curtain or a drapery rod installed at the backboard, which bring color and pattern to break up a window or room wall. Although, generally a standalone treatment, they can be split pleated or inset with alternate fabric, gathered or swaged, allowing them to pair nicely with other types of window treatment, choosing ones that work fairly well with them to create that elegant look, worthy of a luxurious home.

Roman Shades

Blinds obscure the view from the window and can come in wooden, velour, or fabric. For a more minimalist look, Roman shades are ideal as they feature one continuous piece of fabric with horizontal folds that allow you to retract them smoothly without sacrificing the overall aesthetic value. They can function as shades but have the soft feel of traditional drapery.

Window Treatment Ideas and Drapery: Pleated Curtains

Pleats

Pleated window treatment adds a sleeker and more modern feel to your home. You can pull back pleated drapery in case you need to and let it cover your windows when the heat of the sun gets a little too intense.

Cafe Curtains

Cafe curtains work like normal curtains, only that they are shorter in length, allowing you to combine them with traditional drapery. You place them at the bottom half of your windows. They’re great for allowing views from inside your home, all while providing you the privacy you need.

For starters, cornices and valances definitely work best for any home as they can already add a touch of luxury in a simple way. Whichever of the above you choose though, ensure that you use quality fabrics, especially if you have ones that are custom made.
