Tips to Get Outdoor Living Spaces Ready for Fall

After the long summer, the orange leaves slowly plummeting to the ground is a welcome sight. Finally, the temperatures are dropping, even in sunny Arizona! What better way to welcome Fall than to prepare your outdoor living space, so you can enjoy the scenery with your family and friends? Here are ways you can refresh your backyard for the fall season.

Deep Cleaning Your Patio

It’s important to give your patio a little scrubbing down once in a while. Fall season will bring in a lot of debris and insects into your deck or patio, so it’s important to sweep them off as often as you can. Use a pressure washer to deep clean wood or tile flooring with difficult stains. But remember, while pressure washers be fine for some surfaces, it can also peel off grout between concrete and turn wood softer. So remember to keep a six-inch distance from the wood and don’t set the power too high.

Replace or Reupholster Outdoor Furniture

Create a stylish outdoor space where your guests can feel comfortable while enjoying the fall breeze. If the summer heat did a number on your upholstered outdoor furniture, consider having them reupholstered with high-quality fabric like Sunbrella. Sunbrella fabrics are waterproof, stain proof, and doesn’t fade. It’s also great for high traffic areas where you entertain guests or lounge around with family.

Slipcovers, Cushions, and Pillows

You can never go wrong with adding more comfort in your lounge area. Outdoor cushions and pillows don’t only provide comfort, they also uplift the space if you use colorful fabric. Slipcovers are also a great way of protecting your furniture while keeping it comfy. One trick is to make sure you use contrasting colors. For example, if you’re using blue slipcovers, orange and yellow pillows can provide a striking contrast. Making use of patterns against plains is also a must!

Get Your Lawn Ready for Fall

Raking leaves and keeping your lawn clean may sound tedious, but it’s necessary. By raking leaves, you’re allowing your lawn to breathe. Piles of moist leaves may invite pests and insects, and this is why you should never miss cleaning your lawn. You can also turn fallen leaves into mulch to fertilize bare soil. Your pool also needs regular cleaning if it’s not covered. Pruning shrubs and branches can also help prevent more debris from falling into your pool or deck.

Claire Grunstein’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award & Upcoming Appearances

Fabrics That Go is one of the oldest businesses in Arizona. A big part of this resilience through the years is the Founder of Fabric that Go, Claire Grunstein. Without a hint of slowing down, Claire is in her 90's and still works at the store 30 hours a week. Claire has seen Arizona grow before her eyes as she continues to grow her thriving Tucson fabric business. She adapts to new trends & technology to keep her business flourishing.

72 years in the business

Arizona businesses come & go, but Fabrics That Go has stayed strong over the years.  Because of her humble beginnings, Claire has appreciated the simplest things in life. At 16, she got out of school and worked secretarial jobs in New York. Working across the street from the New York Library, she had the opportunity of learning from their many books. She started her obsession of fabric and fashion as Lord & Taylor was also on the same street.

She met her husband, Herman, at a ball in New York. They married in 1954 and had two sons who are actively part of the business. Herman supported Claire and her love for fabrics as they built the company from the ground-up.

Currently, Fabrics that Go has a 13,000 square foot store, with more than 10,000 bolts of fabrics around the world, along with a fully functional online store, where inventory is added daily.

Entrepreneur of the Year

As a businesswoman of today, Claire will be honored as Entrepreneur of the Year by Ready Set Go Foundation on September 27, at the Biltmore Hotel for her contribution to the Arizona Community and becoming an inspiration to business owners. Her achievements in business are encouraging and inspiring entrepreneurs of all generations.

Ready Set Go (RSG) Foundation is an organization that aims to help women, the underserved, and veteran entrepreneurs. They empower and educate people to become financially independent, and to help build income for their families through business ownership.

Watch Out for Claire’s Upcoming Appearances

Claire will also be interviewed by Arizona’s Trusted Home Improvement Resource Rosie on the House, and will by featured on Tucson’s Local News Segment KGUN 9 On Your Side as well. Stay Tuned- Dates to be determined and announced.

Top Reasons to Upholster an Old Piece of Furniture

Whether you’re moving into a new home or redecorating, you can’t help but notice old furniture that has been lying around for years. Maybe you bought it years ago, or it was inherited from a family member. Be it an old lounge chair, faded couch, or ripped cushions, the urge to replace old furniture is strong because it looks out of place, or outdated. But is it really practical to get rid of them and buy a new one? If you want to refresh your furniture, reupholstering might just do the trick.

New Look, Old Memories

An ottoman you bought with your first salary, the chair cushions you bought for your first house, or your father’s favorite chair - things with sentimental value are hard to throw away. That doesn’t mean you’d have to keep them in your garage so new ones can take their place. With proper care, they can serve as family heirlooms. Classic pieces of furniture can easily be modified to fit your current style. It just needs the right kind of fabric and skilled reupholsterers.

Thank you a million for revitalizing our Queen Anne's so beautifully! I told My husband that the style might date us but then he reminded me that the antique set is 1800’s!! I started to take inventory of the entire room and average age of furniture is 1800 with a nod to 1700 in wall coverings!!! We now have trendy fabric! - Happy Tucson Customer

Better Fabric for Longevity and Style

When choosing the right upholstery-grade fabric, you have to take some things into consideration: Do you want the space to appear bright, simple, or intricate? Who’s going to use the space? How often is it going to be used? For example, Mildew-proof fabrics like Sunbrella is great for both indoor and outdoor use. Aside from being easy to clean, it can withstand high traffic, so you don’t have to worry about it being used to often. Most upholstery-grade fabrics comes in different textures, colors, and patterns that can match any space in your home. The possibilities of customization are endless.

Environmentally Friendly

We need to bring back the good old habit of fixing things when they’re broken. The idea of getting new furniture may sound great, but nothing beats the feeling of giving old things new value.  Re-upholstering lengthens the life of your furniture. By simply modifying your old couch or chair, you’re creating far less waste, and using less energy.

High Quality, High Value

Don’t throw out Granny’s Victorian-style chairs just yet. Oftentimes, older furniture is made with high quality materials & unique designs that is held at high value these days. Breath new life into it by choosing durable, elegant, upholstery-grade fabrics- making them looks as good as new. If you can’t find a place in your home for old furniture, why not reupholster and refurbish them? If it doesn't fit your home's style, you can easily put it up on ebay or Craigslist - that way you’ll have funds to buy a new, modern couch or chair for your living room. Commercial Fabric Projects

Running a successful business requires many things, but for many, the most important aspect is customer experience. Does your establishment reflect your desired aesthetic and meet your standards? It’s important to keep your furniture and drapery maintained, along with making sure they work together in an appealing manner. If your business’ drapery, chairs, booths, benches, etc look drab, faded, or outdated- we have solutions.

Upholstery for Any Establishment

One of the best ways to illustrate your establishment’s style is through furniture upholstery and drapery. After all, most service establishments’ frontline is customer comfort. Choose the best fabric that best represents your business’ brand and identity.  High-grade upholstery is good for almost any type of business for example:

  • Doctor’s office - Waiting room benches, chairs, washable medical table covers
  • Pet Clinic - Pet beds, finisher stools
  • Bars and restaurants - Booth seating, outdoor pads, bar chairs
  • Inns and Hotel - Foyer furniture

Why High-Grade Upholstery?

Using high-grade upholstery for your business has many benefits. For example, you don’t have to deal with problems like warping, or fabric fraying.

High-grade upholstery fabrics are usually odor-releasing and stain resistant. They’re also unlikely to shrink and warp or come apart at the seams.

You can get a high-density, antimicrobial foam that is firmer, and better for high traffic areas in your business establishment.

Make sure to upholster your outdoor furniture in the most fade-resistant, durable fabric, Sunbrella. Fabrics That Go has a vast collection of Sunbrella Fabric available for purchase, and provides complete services for outdoor cushions, pillows, and drapery. Sunbrella is also popular to use indoors for its ease of cleaning.

Reupholstering Existing Furniture

You don't need to replace your business' furniture. One of the best things about reupholstering old furniture is that you get to keep a piece of your establishment's history while giving it a new look. It’s also a great way to keep your business environmentally-friendly because you generate less waste by upcycling old items.

Keeping existing seating, while updating furniture upholstery using new upholstery fabric with stylish & upgraded functionality, could be the rejuvenation your business needs

Fabrics That Go

Our History

The story of Fabrics That Go is really a history lesson of the American textile industry. Robert Grunstein, Claire’s son who has since taken over the day to day operations likes to tell the family history in the fabric industry. “My grandfather started the business in 1945 in Paterson, NJ, which was silk capital of the US, after doing the fabric business for 74 years on the East Coast, my parents thought to retire to Tucson.”

Claire remembers the first night she arrived by plane in Tucson with her late husband Herman. “I’ve never been farther than Pennsylvania so it was big,” Claire recounts. “We landed at night, the city was sparkling. I’ve never seen anything like it. We woke up in the morning and I looked at my husband and said I think I’m in paradise, what am I doing in New Jersey I have to move here!”

Although their intention was to retire, after a month of playing tennis they opened a small hobby store together in Tucson by the late 70s. Claire remembered it “like a closet, this was even smaller than our store in New Jersey.” Before long they moved to a larger store and landed at the store they’ve occupied for the last couple decades on 3105 N Campbell.

Today, Fabrics That Go carries the largest selection of Southwest fabrics in the world and attract customers from throughout the US, Canada, Mexico and as far away as Italy for their unique home fabrics. Despite being in the same industry for her whole life, Claire and her son Robert still has a strong passion for the business, and it starts with their customers. “I love the customer’s,” Claire said, “I want them to be happy, because when you’re fixing up your house and you are making it pretty, it should make you happy.”

Claire, and the rest of the staff will be on hand this Friday & Saturday from 10 am – 5 pm with cake, lemonade and a smile to help customers find their perfect fabrics. If you are lucky, you can catch one of her many fabric stories from the last 22 years on Campbell Avenue. Even if you can’t make it in on Friday or Saturday, stop by soon, there is a good chance you can see Claire when you visit, she still works around 30 hours a week even as she turns 92 this year.

Fabrics That Go, a Family Owned, Local Business

Keeping family values in mind, we back to the community whenever we can. Fabrics That Go supports local culture by showcasing the largest collection of Southwestern fabric, and by providing quality craftsmanship with upholstery and drapery services.

Custom Drapery Styles, Trimmings, and Accessories for your Home

Summer’s here. If you want to block the sunshine in style, it’s time to take a look at your window treatments and give them a little boost. With all kinds of drapery, trimmings, and accessories available, you may find it overwhelming to choose. We’re here to help. Here’s a handy list of drapery trimmings and accessories for different home styles.

Working with Custom Drapery

Getting custom drapery for your home is always the best option. You’ll be able to pick and choose the fabric and have them styled to your liking. Of course, there are some things you should consider before having custom drapery made. Think about how you would like to hang your curtains - by curtain pole or track?

Curtain rods are most commonly used. On the other hand. curtain tracks are almost invisible, often layering different types of curtain fabrics. Think about how thick you want the fabric as well. If you want to completely block out the sun, heavier fabrics or blackout fabrics will do the trick. Sheer curtains are best for homes that are not completely facing the sun.

Types of Pleating

Now that you’ve thought about how you want to hang your curtains and the kind of fabric you like, it’s time to choose the kind of pleating. The pinch pleat and tailored pleat are best for classic looking homes. The same goes for the goblet pleat. These types of pleating sophistication to almost any kind of fabric. Other styles like the box pleat, grommet, rod pocket, and inverted pleat look best in modern or contemporary style homes.

Trimmings

Next up: choosing your trimmings. Before you choose, consider the fabric and the type of pleating you want. Classic trimmings like brush fringes, bullion fringe, tassels or braid trims do not pair well with solid, more contemporary colors. These trimmings best fit classic patterns, neutral, or earthy colors. For a more modern look, ribbon banding, tape trims, and fan edge are the best choices.

Accessories

The last but not the least, are the drapery accessories. The first thing you should look at is your curtain rod. Standard metal rods just won’t cut it, after you’ve painstakingly chosen the fabric, pleating and trimmings of your custom drapery. Curtain rods and finials should match the look of your room. Ornamental rods & finials are great for classic or vintage style rooms. For contemporary rooms, the simpler, the better. Also consider tie backs or holdbacks that contrast or complement the color of your drapery fabric.

Want to see our wide collection of drapery trimmings and accessories? Head over to our store at 3105 N Campbell Ave Tucson, and talk to our friendly staff! They’ll help you pick the best trimmings and accessories for your home. We also do custom drapery according to your specifications.

Custom Projects For Every Room in Your Home

Refreshing your furniture? We’ve all been there. We spend hours looking for decorating inspiration online only to find the same trend over and over. When all else fails, let your imagination loose and think about how you would want your home to look. Don’t know where to start? Here’s a list of custom home projects for every room in your home.

Living Room

When choosing or replacing the furniture in your living room, seats, throws, and slipcovers should take priority over any other furniture, as they are the most used.

Accent Chairs - Start with accent chairs. This is the best way to break the monotony in any space is to use contrasting or complementary colors or patterns. Some accent chairs also look great with multi-fabric upholstery.

Ottomans - Ottomans are also a great addition to any living room, as it doubles as a seat and extra storage.

You may also use ottomans as an extension of your couch, or use it as a footstool.

Couches - Loveseats or three-seater couches? It depends on the amount of space you have of course! Regardless of the size, your couch is the centerpiece of the room, so you should be careful when choosing the fabric for upholstery. Couches usually have neutral colors (or patterns) so it’s easy to contrast with other chairs and throws.

Slipcovers - Slipcovers for your chairs and couches are great too if you want to change your style once in a while.

Dining Room

Dining Chairs - How do you choose the right fabric for your dining chairs? For starters, it depends on the type of material the chair is made of. There’s also size to consider, and the type of table you have. The best fabrics to use are stain-resistant fabrics like microfiber, or even outdoor performance fabrics Sunbrella.

Bedroom

When we think of the bedroom, the first thing that comes to mind is comfort. It’s not just about physical comfort - it’s also about how your bedroom looks.

Headboards - Headboards don’t only protect your walls from scratches, they give you visual comfort. If you’re the expressive type, you can also use the headboard as decor. You can use a variety of fabrics to upholster your headboard - from linen to velvet. Tufted headboards look great in more classic bedrooms, while leather headboards are perfect for a more industrial feel.

Bedding - Why settle for plain old sheets when you want to have maximum physical and visual comfort?

The most common - and perhaps the most comfortable - fabrics used for sheets and mattress covers are linen and cotton.

Backyard

Sometimes we just want to relax outdoors without leaving the comfort of our own homes. When choosing outdoor or patio furniture, consider fabrics that are comfortable, but at the same time, able to withstand the wear and tear.

Patio Furniture - From couches to throws, umbrellas to awnings, the best outdoor fabric should be able to withstand the wear and tear. How do you determine if a fabric is strong enough? Ask your local fabric store about double rubs or abrasion rating. An abrasion rating of 20,000 should be enough for heavy use.

Having custom furniture made to your specifications will make your home look one of a kind, a space that you can truly call your own. Fabrics That Go can help you turn your ideas into reality. Visit our store or contact us today.

Sunbrella for Your Arizona Home

The Sonoran might be known as the wettest desert, but on average it rains only 36 days in a year. Arizona is sunny for the most part of the year, and chances are you’ll be spending a lot of time in your backyard or patio. How do you make your outdoor spaces more inviting? Using the right outdoor fabric for your furniture can make all the difference. Fabrics That Go carries Sunbrella, and it’s one of the best outdoor fabrics you can get. Here’s why:

Made to Last

Sunbrella is a type of fabric with wool-like or cotton-like appearance and texture but is totally synthetic. Made with 100% acrylic fiber, it’s durable enough to withstand the intense Arizona sun and almost any outdoor activity. Because it’s synthetic, it’s fade and stain resistant, it’s not susceptible to mold and mildew.

Popular for Indoor & Outdoor Furniture

Outdoor drapery, grill covers, outdoor upholstery and pillows --these are only a few ways you can use Sunbrella. Because it’s easy to clean, it’s also popular for indoor furniture, especially in high traffic areas in homes with pets and children.

Bar stool cushions or upholstery for easy clean up, with attractive solid colors, are perfect for outdoor bars and barbecues.
Wipe down spills and moisture easily off Sunbrella Fabric, which will last for many years, maintaining its vibrant colors.

Pictured: Just completed sailboat cushions and accessories with specific marine grade vinyl for outdoors.

Style Options to Fit Any Home

With so many color options and patterns to choose from, Sunbrella fabrics make it easier for you to match your outdoor furniture with your landscaping. Pro-tip: matching the color of your plant pots with the biggest furniture will give the space a cohesive feel. Popular solid colors are teal and rust orange.

Southwestern stripes like the orange and red Bravada Salsa fabric (longest running pattern) brings an interesting pop of color. Taupe and grey are also popular bases for larger furniture.

Need to reupholster your furniture? Fabrics That Go does everything from from fabric supply, professional consultation, measurements, labor, to installation and delivery. Contact us for a quote.

Claire Grunstein is the 91-year-old owner of Fabrics that go. She came to Tucson with her husband Herman in the late ’70s with the intention of retiring. She retired from her family’s textile business in New Jersey. Retirement did not sit well with the hardworking couple though, and they decided to open a tiny hobby shop a few months after retiring. The tiny hobby shop grew into what is now Fabrics That Go.

Now 74 years and at 91 years old, Claire is one of the oldest hands-on proprietors in the country. Although the day-to-day operations of the business are handled by her son Robert, she still works up to 30 hours a week and you can usually see her if you drop by the store.

The Button Collection

One of Claire’s passions is collecting buttons, and she currently has an incredibly large rare button collection. These pieces were accumulated over time. There are thousands of buttons in the collection and all of them are for sale depending on the rarity and availability. They can range from a lot in stock to only a few buttons left. Most of these rare buttons are of antique quality and made with superb craftsmanship.

The Materials

The materials used to make these buttons are equally rare and exotic. There are those made from Czechoslovakia glass, Indian metals, silver, and bakelite. There are also those made of organic materials like Mother of Pearl, bone, horn and tree nut.

You’ll even find pieces that are works of art in themselves, like the beaded buttons and the fabric covered ones.

What They Are Used For

These rare buttons are normally used on clothing but they can also be used to decorate pillows and upholstery. Quilters enjoy using these buttons on their pieces because of their great variety. Due to the artistic qualities of these rare buttons, they are even used for jewelry like children’s charms and as decorations and clasps on purses. They have even been embedded on coffee tables. The possibilities are endless!

All designers, artists, and DIYers are welcome to check out Claire’s rare button collection. You might be inspired to use them in your future creative projects. Your imagination is the limit with what you can do with these buttons. Come by as soon as you can, since some of these buttons have very limited stock left. Just drop by Fabrics That Go and ask to see Claire’s rare buttons, you will be guided back to explore the amazing pieces, and to choose which buttons you’d like to purchase.

Fabrics That Go is home to rare fabric, buttons, and more! Our staff is also skilled in custom drapery, and upholstery, and will work according to your needs. Drop by the shop to see our vast collection.

Empty Nest? Retired? Now is Your Chance to Update Your Arizona Home Style

Have your kids recently moved out? Perhaps you are planning on retiring or you just retired recently and you have more time to yourself. Now you have time to focus on redesigning your home as you have always desired. What used to be “functional” for your home, may not be aesthetically pleasing to your new found style and updating is due.

Choosing a New Style

When choosing a new style, try going for designs and colors that make you relax. A popular choice among empty nesters is to use new lively fabrics on highlights and accent pieces. You don’t have to change everything in a room to update its style. A simple change in the throw pillows or the valances or cornices can change the whole atmosphere of a room.

The retro vintage style is reminiscent of the late 70s and 80s design where simple elegance your room is highlighted with splashes of color.

The color splashes used to break the flat colors of the room comes from pieces that display floral designs on a background that is similar to the color scheme of the rest of the room.

The minimalist style pairs well with homes inspired by modern architecture.

For this style, you can use monochromatic fabrics that match your walls. You can use drapes that closely match your upholstery. The usual color scheme is white, light gray, or any muted earth color. You can break the monotony by adding a vibrant accent piece.

Fabrics That Go has thousands of bolts of home fabric! We do everything from fabric supply, professional consultation, measurements, labor, to installation and delivery.

The southwestern style aims to make the interior an extension of the desert environment outside.

For accent, it utilizes mostly traditional patterns to incorporate the local culture. You can simply accent a room with these fabrics as upholstery on chairs, table runners, and placemats, or even bedding.

Popular Fabrics

Some of the most popular fabrics used to update house styles are of Claire’s own designs. Claire is the 91-year-old owner of Fabrics that go and is highly experienced in the fabrics business.

Her designs are so popular because they are a blend of contemporary and postmodern that it appeals to customers looking for bright southwest colors without leaving them with only ethnic contrasts.

If you drop by the store, there is a big chance you could find her there and get her expert advice.

What You Can Do

You actually don’t need to spend a fortune to update your home’s interior. You don’t have to make major changes either to change the feel and atmosphere of your home.

Your change could be as small and simple as reupholstering your kitchen chairs, or even just get matching runners and placemats in the design you want to have can do. Changing the drapes, valances and cornices in a room is often enough to update the feel of that room.
