DIY Masks: COVID-19 Quarantine Project

COVID-19 spreads through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.

Medical masks are not readily available to the public, reserving stock for health workers who need them the most, as they’re exposed to the virus in their line of work. With the limited number of masks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a good number of people have resorted to making their own.

Are Homemade Cloth Masks Effective?

The CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.

Cloth masks can be fashioned from fabrics and can be a decent alternative to medical masks if you don’t have access to them.

The CDC is recommending everyone wear a mask that covers nose and mouth when in public areas.
The CDC is recommending everyone wear a mask that covers nose and mouth when in public areas.

What Do I Need to Consider in a Homemade Mask?

First, the mask should have a snug fit. They should be secured with ties or elastic ear loops and should have multiple layers of fabrics to stop contaminated aerosol from penetrating it. More importantly, the mask shouldn’t restrict breathing and should be able to be laundered or machine-dried without damaging it.

While homemade masks are not as effective as surgical or N95 masks, they can help in slowing the spread of infection. Are you looking to make your own masks? Here’s how you can start.

The Materials

  • ✓ A suitable fabric
  • ✓ Lightweight fusible interfacing
  • ✓ ¼ inch elastic bands
  • ✓ Needle and thread
  • ✓ Scissors

Step-by-Step

Step 1:

Cut both fabric and interfacing to 12 x 9 inches

Step 2:

Iron interfacing to fabric

Step 3:

Fold fabric in half with interacting on the outside

Step 4:

Cut two pieces of elastic bands, 7 inches long each

Step 5:

Sew ¼ inch from the edge of the material, pinning them down and leaving a 2-inch gap in the center

Step 6:

On the material, sew the elastic bands on each corner inside the material, pinning to keep them in place

Step 7:

Mark locations of pleat lines and add pins on both sides

Step 8:

Create three pleats by folding them and sew around the entire perimeter of the mask to hold them in place, and then close the 2-inch gap

Lastly, be sure to test out your new mask to see if it’s breathable.

With homemade masks, you can help slow the infection, considering you’re using the right fabrics.

Donating Masks

If you’re making masks at home for yourself, family, and friends-  why not consider donating some to local Tucson frontliners?

Because homemade masks are not medical grade, they will not be worn by providers directly caring for COVID-19 patients, nor in procedure rooms or isolation areas, where only Banner-approved personal protective equipment must be worn.

How it Works

All comfort masks are welcome, but they must be made from a material that can be laundered. Donated masks will be professionally laundered by Prestige Cleaners, which has generously donated its services, before being given to staff and patients. After receiving a clean mask, staff and patients will be advised to personally launder their masks daily.

INSTRUCTIONS: Place homemade masks in a box, bag or container in your car’s trunk labeled “homemade masks” with the quantity enclosed (no need to individually bag or package each mask). Please place any other items for donation in a separate box or container. Park, remain in your car with the windows up and call 520.694.9180 upon arrival. Pop your trunk and a staff member wearing gloves and a mask will retrieve your donated items and leave a donation form in your trunk for you to complete and return via email in order to obtain a donation receipt.

Claire Grunstein’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award & Upcoming Appearances

Fabrics That Go is one of the oldest businesses in Arizona. A big part of this resilience through the years is the Founder of Fabric that Go, Claire Grunstein. Without a hint of slowing down, Claire is in her 90's and still works at the store 30 hours a week. Claire has seen Arizona grow before her eyes as she continues to grow her thriving Tucson fabric business. She adapts to new trends & technology to keep her business flourishing.

72 years in the business

Arizona businesses come & go, but Fabrics That Go has stayed strong over the years.  Because of her humble beginnings, Claire has appreciated the simplest things in life. At 16, she got out of school and worked secretarial jobs in New York. Working across the street from the New York Library, she had the opportunity of learning from their many books. She started her obsession of fabric and fashion as Lord & Taylor was also on the same street.

She met her husband, Herman, at a ball in New York. They married in 1954 and had two sons who are actively part of the business. Herman supported Claire and her love for fabrics as they built the company from the ground-up.

Currently, Fabrics that Go has a 13,000 square foot store, with more than 10,000 bolts of fabrics around the world, along with a fully functional online store, where inventory is added daily.

Entrepreneur of the Year

As a businesswoman of today, Claire will be honored as Entrepreneur of the Year by Ready Set Go Foundation on September 27, at the Biltmore Hotel for her contribution to the Arizona Community and becoming an inspiration to business owners. Her achievements in business are encouraging and inspiring entrepreneurs of all generations.

Ready Set Go (RSG) Foundation is an organization that aims to help women, the underserved, and veteran entrepreneurs. They empower and educate people to become financially independent, and to help build income for their families through business ownership.

To learn more, visit rsgsummit.org.

Watch Out for Claire’s Upcoming Appearances

Claire will also be interviewed by Arizona’s Trusted Home Improvement Resource Rosie on the House, and will by featured on Tucson’s Local News Segment KGUN 9 On Your Side as well. Stay Tuned- Dates to be determined and announced.

40% off in stock fabrics – celebrating Claire’s 90th Birthday!

Fabrics That Go Owner Celebrates 90th Birthday with 40% Off In Stock Fabrics in Store Sale

In celebration of one of the oldest local active business owners in Tucson, come down to Fabrics That Go this Saturday, July 8th for a 40% off in stock fabrics and celebrate the 90th birthday of store founder Claire Grunstein. The story of Fabrics That Go is really a history lesson of the American textile industry. Robert Grunstein, Claire's son who has since taken over the day to day operations likes to tell the family history in the fabric industry. “My grandfather started the business in 1945 in Paterson, NJ, which was silk capital of the US, after doing the fabric business for 74 years on the East Coast, my parents thought to retire to Tucson.” Claire remembers the first night she arrived by plane in Tucson with her late husband Herman. “I've never been farther than Pennsylvania so it was big,” Claire recounts. “We landed at night, the city was sparkling. I've never seen anything like it. We woke up in the morning and I looked at my husband and said I think I'm in paradise, what am I doing in New Jersey I have to move here!” Although their intention was to retire, after a month of playing tennis they opened a small hobby store together in Tucson by the late 70s. Claire remembered it “like a closet, this was even smaller than our store in New Jersey.” Before long they moved to a larger store and landed at the store they've occupied for the last couple decades on 3105 N Campbell. Today, Fabrics That Go carries the largest selection of Southwest fabrics in the world and attract customers from throughout the US, Canada, Mexico and as far away as Italy for their unique home fabrics. Despite being in the same industry for her whole life, Claire and her son Robert still has a strong passion for the business, and it starts with their customers. “I love the customer's,” Claire said, “I want them to be happy, because when you're fixing up your house and you are making it pretty, it should make you happy.” Claire, her son Robert and the rest of the staff will be on hand this Saturday from 10 am – 5 pm with cake and a smile to help customers find their perfect fabrics. If you are lucky, you can catch one of her many fabric stories from the last 22 years on Campbell Avenue.
